My last job in London saw me seated 5 steps from the CEO’s office (all windows) and 2 desks away from the central kitchen, so I had people constantly walking back and forth by my desk. To top that off, I could always feel my line manager glancing at my screen (even if she wasn’t, that was the vibe), and we weren’t allowed to leave coats on our chairs because it looked too messy.

If I have my own office, or even just a cubicle, I’m way more productive — precisely because I’m able to decompress throughout the day and browse Twitter or shut my eyes for a minute. Feeling like I’m always on display, like one second of looking at something which isn’t work is going to get me told off, is so detrimental.
